Key facts from SemiAnalysis: six DeepSeek repos now support Huawei Ascend, and only TileLang was usable at the time of writing.

DeepSeek's new Huawei Ascend support is closing the software gap with NVIDIA's CUDA ecosystem faster than the Ascend 950PR accelerator is closing the hardware gap, according to a SemiAnalysis report dated October 21 that the South China Morning Post summarized on October 22.
The report centers on DeepSeek, which SemiAnalysis says released Ascend support for six open-source repositories right before China's national day holidays: TileLang, DeepGEMM, DeepEP, TileKernels, FlashMLA and DeepSelect. SemiAnalysis expects DeepSeek to rely primarily on Huawei's stack in 2027 or 2028. SCMP framed it as a scenario in which Jensen Huang's "nightmare" starts to come true.
What It Means for the AI Chip Supply Chain
NVIDIA's pitch to China-facing buyers has rested on CUDA, not only on chips. If a leading Chinese model lab ports its kernels, expert-parallel communication and model day-0 releases to Ascend, the switching cost that kept domestic buyers on NVIDIA falls. That shifts where Chinese AI capacity gets built and which accelerators fill it. Voltgrid News reported earlier on Huawei's offshore loan as chip and memory costs climb.
