France's nuclear safety authority ASNR has found no obstacle to EDF reactors running beyond 60 years for which the utility lacks a remedy, its president Pierre-Marie Abadie told AFP on Thursday, Oct. 22.
The position is not a licence. Abadie said it reflects current knowledge, and that several technical topics still require substantial work by EDF to confirm that its remedies are effective. Only then can they enter the safety case submitted when each reactor reaches its 60-year review. He stressed this is neither an early 60-year review nor an early authorisation to extend.

The draft opinion is neither an early 60-year review nor an early authorisation; the 60-year marks arrive around 2030-2040, AFP reported.

The regulator has drafted an opinion on extending operating duration and presented it to the French parliamentary science and technology office the same day. It is open to public consultation until Dec. 2, after which ASNR will issue a final opinion, AFP reported.
