Samsung Electronics has reportedly created a "Core Team" inside its Semiconductor Research Center to develop next-generation DRAM and NAND flash, and will pay its members performance bonuses at the Memory Business division's level, according to Korean press reports dated Oct. 21 and 22.
The Asia Business Daily, citing industry sources, said the Device Solutions (DS) division formed the team to shorten development timelines and raise the quality of new memory products, working alongside the Memory Business unit. The research center is led by Song Jae-hyuk, the DS division's chief technology officer. JKN, another Korean outlet, put its headcount at about 2,000 employees.
How the Core Team Bonus Changes Pay
Under the special management performance bonus criteria set in labor-management talks last May, the research center counted as a shared organization and was set to receive about 70% of the bonus paid to Memory Business employees, the Asia Business Daily reported. Engineers working on the same project were therefore paid on different scales depending on where they sat, which the outlet said had caused internal dissatisfaction. Core Team members will now receive the Memory Business scale if they meet their individual development targets.
